MASON & HAMLIN PIANOS – TENSION RESONATOR
Posted on January 13th, 2022
Ever heard about “Tension Resonators“? It is a technology developed by Mason & Hamlin. To further understand, let us explain how the piano produces its sound. Pressing a key will make the piano action hit the strings and sound will resonate through the soundboard making the sound louder and crisper. To further maintain the quality of sound, the piano needs to maintain a slight upward arch to the soundboard also known as the “Crown”. A piano with a soundboard flat out will produce a dull sound, tones will not last. To maintain this crown, a piano must have massive rims. Mason and Hamlin took it further, they developed a device called the tension resonator and installed it under the piano to hold the rims. That is why even old Mason and Hamlin pianos have vibrant sounds due to their excellent crown. Only Mason and Hamlin pianos have it, so next time you see one, check it out under the piano.
